INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS MODELS IN AGRICULTURE 2023

IBMA held a conference in Kigali, Rwanda in March 2023 where AVBS presented on The Role of Academia and Research in Promoting Agriculture for Smallholders

Natnael Tilaye presented on behalf of Prof. Dr Gudrun Frank, who was invited to be part of this
conference. He delved into the fascinating transformation that the field of agriculture has
undergone over the years, with technology emerging as a driving force behind this evolution. We
marvel at how precision agriculture, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence have revolutionized the
sector, infusing it with newfound efficiency and productivity.

These remarkable innovations have not only ushered in cutting-edge technologies but have also led
to the emergence of novel structures and practices within the realm of farming. This includes
sophisticated data collection methods and advanced agricultural management systems. Undeniably,
the chasm between traditional farming practices and modern agricultural businesses is substantial,
but it's imperative that we work to bridge this divide through education and entrepreneurship.

He further went on to discuss the Competence Requirements and Structures needed. Competence,
defined as the ability to perform a task or job effectively and efficiently while exuding self-
confidence and entrepreneurship is paramount in our context. In the world of agriculture,
competence translates to the proficiency in harnessing new technologies and techniques to enhance
farm operations, drawing from both historical knowledge and innovative solutions.

An individual's grasp of technology adoption plays a pivotal role in the success of farmers and all
stakeholders involved. To become truly competent in agricultural technology, farmers and
stakeholders alike must acquire a deep understanding of the technology itself and how it can be
effectively applied to their specific farming operations.

This profound comprehension empowers them to troubleshoot challenges and make well-informed
decisions based on the data collected and the processes outlined. In essence, competence in
agriculture technology serves as the cornerstone for elevating our industry to new heights of
efficiency, sustainability, and prosperity.
